Compare Houstonian and Western Long by real dimensions, card and cash layout, and the pocket or bag where you plan to carry them.
Long wallets for men make sense when a taller layout suits what you carry: flat bills, a checkbook, cards and paper you want to keep organized. The trade-off is length. Before choosing one, compare the closed dimensions with the pocket or bag where it will actually ride.
This guide compares two Bull Sheath designs, the Houstonian and the Western Long. It is a comparison of our own range, not an independent ranking of every wallet on the market. The useful question is whether this layout fits your day.
Who needs a long wallet?
A long wallet is worth considering if you carry a checkbook, prefer bills flat, or want a taller interior for cards and paper. It is less useful when your main goal is to keep a small pocket as clear as possible.
Start with what your present wallet makes awkward. If your cash is always folded into a tight stack or your checkbook needs a separate home, the extra length has a purpose. If you carry three cards and rarely use cash, there may be little reason to carry more leather.

Which dimensions should you check against your pocket or bag?
Check the closed size first. The Houstonian and Western Long each measure 3.25 × 6.875 inches closed. That tells you the outline you need to accommodate; it does not establish the loaded thickness or guarantee that every back pocket will hold it comfortably.
Measure the space where you plan to carry it. A jacket's interior pocket, a bag and a back pocket have different openings and depths. Allow room to take the wallet out, not just enough space to push it in.
The Houstonian's open measurement is 7 × 6.875 inches. Keep open and closed dimensions separate when comparing products. A picture of a wallet laid flat can make it difficult to judge what you will carry once it is folded and filled.

How do Houstonian and Western Long compare?
They share the same long-format layout and closed dimensions. Choose between the plain Houstonian exterior and the western tooling on the Western Long, rather than expecting a different cash or card arrangement.
Houstonian
- Closed size: 3.25 × 6.875 inches
- Card layout: Six slots plus bilateral vertical pockets
- Cash: Two full-length pockets
- Material: Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather
- Exterior: Houstonian finish
Western Long
- Closed size: 3.25 × 6.875 inches
- Card layout: Six slots plus bilateral vertical pockets
- Cash: Two full-length pockets
- Material: Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather
- Exterior: Western tooling
The Houstonian checkbook carry is built around room for cards, cash and a full-size checkbook. The Western Long finish adds western character to that same tall layout. Both are handcrafted in Mansfield, Texas and currently come in Saddle Tan, Walnut Brown, Chestnut Brown and Black.
Pick the exterior you want to carry. The tooling changes the look; it does not create additional card slots or make the closed wallet shorter.

What do six slots and additional pockets actually mean?
Six card slots describe the dedicated openings in the layout. The bilateral vertical pockets sit behind them, and the two full-length cash pockets provide separate space along the wallet. That is more useful information than an unsupported claim that a wallet holds a particular number of cards.
We are not giving a tested maximum card count for these models. Use the stated layout to organize what you normally carry, and avoid treating every pocket as an invitation to pack in more receipts.
Check the interior product photographs before choosing. Look for where you want cards, cash and a checkbook to sit. Then compare that arrangement with how you use your current wallet, rather than buying only from a closed exterior shot.

When does a smaller format make more sense?
A smaller format makes sense when long cash pockets and checkbook space are not priorities. If card organization is the main issue, consider the trifold pocket-fit trade-offs instead. Three panels solve a different carry problem from a tall two-panel layout.
For a gift, check whether the recipient already uses a long wallet or regularly carries the things that justify one. If you need help choosing by habit rather than appearance, read the guide to choosing a useful leather gift.
What else should you know before ordering?
Will either design carry a checkbook?
The Houstonian and Western Long are described as checkbook-carry designs. Compare the product dimensions with your particular checkbook and intended carry space before ordering.
Are the dimensions open or closed?
The shared 3.25 × 6.875-inch measurement is closed. The Houstonian also has a stated open measurement of 7 × 6.875 inches. Do not substitute one for the other.
How many cash pockets do they have?
Both current product descriptions specify two full-length cash pockets, alongside six card slots and bilateral vertical pockets.
Can I add personalization?
Personalization is available; check the choices on the product before ordering. Customized pieces are final sale. Items without customization are covered by the 60-Day Bull Ride, while maker errors and defects are repaired or replaced under the separate No Bull Guarantee.
Final thoughts
Choose a long wallet because you need its layout. Check the closed dimensions, decide where it will ride and look at the interior before picking the exterior. The right format gives your everyday carry a sensible home without making you carry things you do not need.
