If you are wondering exactly how popular leather goods are made, you are not alone. For inquisitive minds, it’s common to question where our favorite accessories come from and that includes leather wallets. You may see leather wallets advertised as handcrafted and made in the USA, but what exactly does that mean? Here’s a guide to an American leather workshop where wallets are handcrafted.
Step One: Drawing the Pattern
The process begins with the leatherworker putting their design down on paper. They draw the pattern of the wallet that they are looking to create, helping to define its shape and size.
Step Two: Transferring the Pattern Onto Leather
Once the pattern has been drawn, the next step is to transfer it onto the leather. The expert will secure the pattern onto the leather then, using a pen that will be easy to erase later, they trace along the edges of the pattern. They make sure that the line is clear and free from errors before moving on.
Step Three: Cutting Out the Pattern
During the first cut, precision is not needed. Preliminary cuts are made between 0.5cm and 1cm away from the pattern, creating a margin that can be worked with in the following steps.
Step Four: Attaching the Lining
The leathermaker then selects the lining that they would like to use for the wallet, opting for a material that is thin and soft to ensure that the wallet remains thin. They add adhesive to the back and place onto the leather, ensuring that it is even and free from air bubbles by rolling over the top.

Step Five: Cutting With Precision
Once the lining is attached, it’s time for the precise cutting. Preparation is key here and leatherworkers will ensure that the markings are correct, all lines are clear and that there are no errors. They’ll take a sharp knife and metal ruler and cut along the pattern, ensuring an accurate and even cut. They’ll remove any excess leather fibers and inspect each edge to ensure that they are smooth.
Step Six: Assembling the Wallet
Assembling the wallet is a detailed and intricate process. In most workshops, they will first use adhesive to glue the wallet together before proceeding with punching holes and stitching. Once the adhesive has set, the leatherworker will draw lines to determine where the holes are needed before using a punch and hammer to punch through the leather.
They inspect each hole to make sure that they are accurate for stitching. When they are satisfied that the holes are to standard, they’ll prepare their needle and thread and stitch around the edges of the wallet. Leatherworkers will often opt for the saddle stitch because of it’s durability.
Step Seven: Adding the Detail
Once the wallet is assembled, it’s time to add the detail that really elevate the product. This could include smoothing or painting the edges, adding any personalized elements and adding the company’s signature stamp or detailing. During this process, the leatherworker will also tidy any imperfections such as loose threads or uneven edges. And that’s the leather wallet making process finished.
